Red sun between the birches

In his letter of september 17,1883 Vincent wrote to his brother Theo:”I am making another studyof a red sun between the little birches in a marshy meadow, from which the white evening haze is rising, and beyond which one can just see at the horizon a bluish-grey line of trees wih a few roofs.”

All the above mentioned elements can be seen in the painting.

Under the painting is found by X-ray another painting. One can see a man with a beard and a woman or child. The man is probable the orphan-man who is drawed more then thirty times by Vincent van Gogh
