Introduction

The Marijnissen collection is a (ex)collection of approx. 250 paintings, watercolors and drawings, that came from the property of Barend den Houter at Breda. The collection was obtained in 1939 by A.Marijnissen,(1899-1994) tax official at Breda. Many of the works of the collection are signed “Vincent” , Marijnissen considered the collection as work of Vincent van Gogh. Marijnissen did not succeed to receive acknowledge for his idea. One of the problems was that there was no information about the provenance of the collection. Research by a team of the Breda’s Museum while preparing the exposition “Lost and found”, on the occasion of the memory that Vincent van Gogh 150 years ago was born in Zundert near Breda, a city in the south of the Netherlands, resulted in the discovery that Mrs.van Gogh-Carbentus, the mother of Vincent van Gogh, moved in 1889 from Breda to Leiden and lived in a house owned by Barend den Houter, the uncle of Barend den Houter, who owned the “hidden collection” till 1939. Herewith an important missing link in the “provenance” seems to be solved.

In the Marijnissen collection are (“Vincent”signed) pictures who:

- can be related to the environs where Vincent van Gogh lived and worked

- are mentioned and/or described in his letters

- contain underdrawings that can be related to Vincent van Gogh

- are work after example of artists admired by him

- are combinations of the mentioned elements.

I hope that this writing will contribute to find an answer: can work in the Marijnissen Collection be of the hand of Vincent van Gogh??
